NEAC Ordination Stole Project
Background: Each year fabrics from previous years’ stoles are incorporated into the designs, linking each group of ordinands to those who came before them and those who will come after.
2020 and 2021 ordination stoles for deacons and elders are alike and yet each slightly unique. These two classes are ordained near the end of the long COVID experience in New England. These stoles present the beloved community as parts in motion,
sometimes madly juggling,
sometimes with spirits rising like gentle soap bubbles,
sometimes with the exuberant joy of playing ball,
Sometimes one stepping stone at a time.
The materials from from every inhabited continent where cloth is made. Silk from Prema Devadhar's sari collection appears in the bright yellow circles.

The 2019 Ordination stoles depict the dance of spirit filled life. Dancers of many ages, styles, and backgrounds populate the red ground of celebration. One again, sari material from Prema Devadhar's collection enliven the stoles.

They devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. Awe came upon everyone, because many wonders and signs were being done by the apostles. All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much time together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous* hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. In celebration of the 2017 New England Annual Conference theme,
“Vital Conversations: Race,” the 2017 ordination stoles feature crosses constructed of fabric from races, ethnicities, and cultures in every part of the earth. The three Pentecost stripes share fabric with earlier years’ ordination stoles, signifying the order of elders in which ordinands are now full members. The lining this year is from the Indian fabric collection of Prema Devadhar, wife of Bishop Sudarshana Devadhar. The red fabric reminiscent of netting was made in Syria and purchased in Jerusalem’s old market.

because there were so many fish. John 21:5-6

Theme: Strangely Warmed-Formed by God
Narrative Focus: John Wesley’s testimony as his call was formed by God.
Stole Design: The 2013 conference theme emphasized one of our five critical issues as a conference, “Spiritual Life: We are a people who year for God and seek healing and spiritual life through Jesus Christ in order to be united in trust and mission.” The logo demonstrated the way faith is formed both by crisis (fire colors) and by organic development (a shell like spiral). This year’s stoles feature a print on silk of the Conference logo with portions the leadership verses (underlined) of ordinands hand written in outreaching lines.

Theme: Catching the Wave: Sailing to Congregational Vitality
Stole Design: This year’s ordination service recognized how the Spirit uniquely equips us to navigate the signs and wonders of our diverse calls to ministry.
